Hamburger Shot Revisited

Since last year I have been thinking about re polishing the character's lip sync of this acting animation shot.
The feedback of the animators whom I've shown this piece to, was good regarding the body animation, acting choices, and expressions.
However most of them said the timing of the lip sync was a bit off.
I always considered the lip sync a very challenging animation process as one wrong mouth shape can ruin the performance, and adapting the lip sync to the character emotions is never an easy task.
The challenge is mixing the mouth shapes, the facial expressions and the lip sync, to create a natural and believable performance.

I spent the last week working on this shot, and also adding a new animation pass fixing the elbow's pops, hand's arc and overlapping the animation of the fingers and the direction of the eyes.
I also spent some time re texturing the character clothes, the texture of his nails and re designing the hair.
The original audio was extracted from Tarantino's "Pulp Fiction" movie, where Vincent (John Travolta) and Jules (Samuel L. Jackson) are sent to retrieve Marcellus Wallace's suitcase.
I tried to get a different approach from the movie, where we have a tense monologue, and my acting choices headed to a more innocent and funny way.
My original acting performance reference/tests, and all the concepts references/drawings are included in the making of.

My friend, Sidney Vigo helped in the first pass of the textures/light/render and setting up the Maya hair.

Texturing/Rendering time: 24 hours

Hope you like it!
