Last month, I put together what I feel the best animated shots I have done over the past 2 years.
The song I chose to track some shots was "Topsy" from Jungle Reinhardt, an artist I started to admire a couple of years back, when I heard his version of the song "Brazil".

* There are 2 shots from the movie "Lino: Uma aventura de 7 vidas" I decided to edit with the original provided audio, in order to preserve the lip sync, and the energy of the shot.

Hope you all like it,

At the end of 2016, the animation was completed for the movie "Lino: Uma Aventura de 7 vidas" produced by Start Anima and FOX FILMES DO BRASIL.
It was 2 years animating for the movie.
The movie was the starting point of my career of animator, and I am very proud of the work we did.
Below the animation playblasts and the rendered version of my best shots.

I like to show the playblasts as it helps to evaluate the animation before the lightning process, and the sound effects. There were some lines recorded after the animation so the playblast´s lip-sync is more accurate also.
Last 3 months I had the opportunity to animate a cat and a dog for 2 TVC´s.
I had the pleasure to work with a talent group of friends and it was fun taking the project to reality.
The final look is very realistic, I was impressed when I watched the commercial on TV!
November last year, I was asked to animate a sequence from a campaign against the abuse in the relationships, campaign made by DayOne organization.
The animation was produced by Vetor Zero. It was animated on 2"s which gave a more appealing look to the campaign.
Last year I worked on "Jingliks", a russian´s TV series made by Open Alliance Media.
The show is on Disney Channel and Nicklodeon, and has been very popular with kids.
This is the collection of the best shots I have done. Loved to work with Bedokur, the main character of the show:
Animating a realistic chicken isn´t an easy task.
Took quite a while to figure out the way this specific bird moves, helpfully as it is a domestic animal, I could get loads of references to study.

Unusual situations for a chicken

I was responsible to create the "feel" of the shots and the walk of the chicken and got the opportunity at Vetor Zero to create the Animatic also - So, for 2 weeks I was only thinking about chickens. Saw loads of references and documentaries to the point where I could understand visually the dos and don´ts of a chicken moving realistic. This it was crucial as I was assigned to 4 shots where the chicken was in an unusual situations for a bird and also talking to the camera.

I started the chicken walk animating the feet, and making it sure it was solid.
After that I jumped to the body, creating some flow that matches the up and downs of a bird, not a hard task also.
As I animated birds feet "a lot" on HAPPY FEET 2 I have done this initially task quite fast, but when I started to work on the neck/head I had to come back to the references and figure out a way to understand how it works.

The neck/head of some type of bird they work in a different pace of the body, looking like it belongs to a different body. It is a very fast/snappy flow - when a chicken is walking, the head barely moves, stay most of the time stationery as the body progresses, then it catches up the body after. It seems watching that the head is always in alert mode as the body moves in a different flow.

It has been almost 2 years that I´ve started working on the movie Lino, at Start Anima (São Paulo) and produced by FOX Brasil.
We finished the animation on October and the teaser was released 2 weeks ago:

Under the supervising of Fernando Herrera and Daniel Cavalcante and having Rafael Ribas as director of the movie, I was tested with all kind of shots and characters.
It was a great experience, where I worked on all my skills getting the "right" performance to the shot. Also, working on the movie I had the opportunity to learn a lot about my weakness and strength as animator.

The movie will be released in 2017 (Brazil), and I really hope it goes well in the cinemas as everything is looking awesome!

I hope you all like it :)
Cheers!
Long time ago, when I was enrolled at AnimationMentor I saw an impressive skateboard animation.
For some reason that animation stuck in my mind, and many years after, I decided to do my own skateboard animation.
I started it with one shot, the guy jumping from a stair level. I've got all the references, drew the poses and I've animated very quickly. In less than 3 days the polished animation was done.
Most of my animator's friends liked the shot. The positive feedback gave me confidence to keep working with the sequence, and thought that would be nicer if I could add other shots to create a story for that jump. At that point, I started the journey of getting that sequence done.

One of the references for the textures/render

Planning the sequence I've started watching a lot of skateboard and Olympics competitions.

In sport events, slow motion cameras are heavily used to analyze the performances. I thought that I could be using slow motion shots telling the character performance in the sequence also.
After blocking out and combining/editing the shots I started getting feed back and polishing the whole piece which took over than an year as I couldn't work consistently.
Adding all the accessories to the Morpheus rig was a fun job. The most challenging task was getting the t-shirt's simulation working in all shots.
I had to make it sure that the cloth performance wouldn't take the attention from the performance yet it should sell the shots nicely. For some shots, I had to hand animate the t-shirt's vertices, getting the shapes to work properly.

Venice Beach Skate Park

After animating the character, I started modeling and rigging the accessories.
I rigged the shoes and the helmet, and for the skateboard I've added simple controls to move the main piece along with the wheel's rig. The knee protection, socks and the trousers I've modeled from the character's rig, extruding and modifying the model.

When I was texturing the character I found pictures from the Venice beach skate park located in California, at the sunset. The yellowish sky over the palm trees and the city's skyline creates a dramatic 'mood' that I was looking for the sequence. That was the concept art I used for the renders and the compostiting.
Most of the textures and some models like the palm trees I've got from free models/textures websites.
Well, this piece gave me so much work but I reckon it came along nicely!

Long time since my last post as I have been working on my character animator reel over the past 2-3 months.
A very challenging fact I faced was to equalize the animation level for all shots as my reel has old and new shots.
After polishing the animation I spent most of the time rendering the shots out and editing the material.
Very fortunate to bump over Django's Reinhardt work last year and find the song 'Brazil' which matched with the 'mood' I was looking for the reel.
I am happy with the final product and I hope you like it too.

About 2-3 weeks ago I've started studying at IAnimate.
I have been thinking about attending the iAnimate classes in a long time and now it is the time!
Every week there is a live tutorial lecture with Jason Ryan and 2 live sessions with our mentor.
The iAnimate animation library is full of references, videos tutorials and the school rigs are very appealing and flexible.

I am enrolled in the Feature WorkShop 4 where it focuses in facial animation.
The workshop is an 14 weeks program, where we will work in 2 acting pieces.
My mentor is Tal Shwarzman, an extremely talented animator, great mentor and person.

I will be posting my animation tests in the future, and below is the last IAnimte student's showcase and my mentor's reel:
For the past 3-4 months I have been attending the 2D animation classes at Studio Technique.
I have been learning so much and also I have been using my animation light table which is great.
Samantha Yossef is a great mentor. She is very open, always trying to get the most of the students. She also knows how to encourage and inspire everyone.
Also the school provides some other great classes like Life Drawing, Character Design and Anatomy. Definitely worth it to check it out if you are an artist that want to sharp your artistic skills.

Animating on paper is very challenging but very fun.
I haven't been drawing for so long. However I could see my improving as my drawing skills where getting better with the time.
The Animation 01 class focuses on the basic 12 animation principles, drawing/flipping techniques, and the program has 10 weeks duration.
Also it is very inspiring to study 2D Disney movies and artists like Milt Kahl. It blows my mind to see how great that artists are.

Bellow the animation exercises I have been working on the past 3 months:

Hello!!!
In the past few weeks my mother and I have been putting an 2D animation table together and we think it came out great!
I wanted a small and portable table and based on references and pictures that I found on animation websites, I created my own design.
Firstly before jumping on the project I modeled it in Maya, so I could get all measurements/sizes for cutting the pieces and getting the main structure done.
In Maya I tested/animated the table angles so I could be sure if all parts would work together (frame 01 to 05).

I spent less than AU$ 100,00 with all materials and some extra money with the tools also, but the entire project didn't cost AU$ 250,00!
The most expensive items I bought was the acrylic top and the lights.
We took pretty much 2-3 days making the base and 2-3 weeks designing and making the external pieces and bits.
Most of the material I found it somewhere, and adapted to the table. The main wood frame I found it in my office, it was a piece of wood they used to use to block one of the windows, the animation peg bar I used a ruler and added three small wood pieces that I cut from painting brushes.

The Maya file -maya 2012- and all references are available for download/research and I
hope that helps other animators to build their own tables!

Cheers!
Dan
of this acting animation shot.
The feedback of the animators whom I've shown this piece to, was good regarding the body animation, acting
choices, and expressions.
However most of them said the timing of the lip sync was a bit off.
I always considered the lip sync a very challenging animation process as one wrong mouth shape can ruin the performance, and adapting the lip sync to the character emotions is never an easy task.
The challenge is mixing the mouth shapes, the facial expressions and the lip sync, to create a natural and believable performance.

I spent the last week working on this shot, and also adding a new animation pass fixing the elbow's pops, hand's arc and overlapping the animation of the fingers and the direction of the eyes.
I also spent some time re texturing the character clothes, the texture of his nails and re designing the hair.
The original audio was extracted from Tarantino's "Pulp Fiction" movie, where Vincent (John Travolta) and
Jules (Samuel L. Jackson) are sent to retrieve Marcellus Wallace's
suitcase.
I tried to get a different approach from the movie, where we have a tense monologue, and my acting choices headed to a more innocent and funny way.
It has been 2 years since the release of my first short "The French Restaurant" and last month it reached 5000 views!
The short was highlighted in the '3D Total' website, and other 3D animations websites at that time, and I am still surprised how many emails I receive from people who are inspired by my short:

About 2 months ago we received a script from Jim Beam with the idea of a bourbon barrel twisting for Devils Cut's TV commercial.

The challenge of animating wood, in this case a wood barrel twisting was something that I never had tested before.
We have been working on the project for 8 weeks and after working on the animatic I started creating the barrel rig. Basically, I created a simple rig for each wood panel, and a more complex rig where the metal rings and the panels could be twisted together in four main sections of the barrel. I end up with a complex rig where I had 6 main controls and another one where I could twist and add geometry deformers to the entire barrel.
After researching references of wood breaking, I started testing the rig.
That was fun. I spent 2-3 days on this process, adjusting the rig and testing it.
I started then animate the barrel having in mind an entire piece of wood being twisted. The animation should be not flexible but snappy and mixing slow twisting with fast movements happening in the small sections (layers) of the barrel. The timing was the key point of the animation, and the shapes shouldn't vary that much.

The wood layers/splinters

In the Graph Editor, the movements showed small bits being twisted at the same time with different timing and without blending shaped. I blocked out the barrel shapes creating the tension point in the metal rings imagining that the heat from the fire would contract the metal rings making the wood panels twist after. When you twist a piece of wood the top layers are forced to break and gradually it separates from the main piece. If you break a wood panel, you never will end up with a smooth cut. The splinters will peel from the main structure as the wood is a group of individual "layers". The animation polishing process was basically creating the tension moments with the layers peeling from the main structure, and creating the splinters individual animation.
The main structure animation was a mix of snappy keyframes (step tangents) with very subtle but fast key frames (flat tangents).
I also hand animated the bourbon droplets coming out from the wood in the last shot of the movie.
I was responsible for the animation layout (Animatic), where we created the idea of the droplets coming from the wood compression. The first tests of the droplets animation wasn't looking right in the renders. The timing was good but something in the droplets wasn't looking organic.
The gravity affects the droplets creating a bigger volume down forcing the object to move towards the floor. It is like a sand sack effect, where the velocity of the droplet should match the shape of it.
More volume in the front, more fast the object travels. After debating the renders with Richard (Light TD) he said that the light would look more interesting if we have a bigger 'gap' between the droplet and the wood.
We concluded that the droplet should have a more 'fat' shape when it is moving which matched with the concept of the gravity affecting the droplet shape animation.
The first renders showed we were right so I animated all the droplets using that concept.

I am happy with the final product and think we created a "believable" piece to sell the idea where the product comes out from a twisted barrel.
It has been a while that I have started working at Resolution Design - Sydney.
The
first project where I supervised the 3D Department/Animation
was"Bulleit Bourbon - It's a long story" where we created 6 3D sequences
for an 90 seconds add. The 3D department was challenged to create
convincing shots to match with an incredible voice over that explains
the story of the main character "Augustus Bulleit" who finds a whiskey recipe that
originated the product.

The following project was "AGL 175 years"
where we created 2 digital shots for the 175th anniversary of the
company.
In one shot we recreated the 18th century look of Fremantle street in Perth, and the Royal Arcade Shopping Centre in Sydney.
Almost 6 months of Happy Feet 2's release, I rented the DVD last weekend. I couldn't believe how good the movie looks!

I still remember the smell of coffee and croissant in the mornings and all great people that I have met at Doctor D. Studios.

I
got that opportunity to put together my motion editor reel with my
shots from the movie. As motion editor you are responsible to smooth the
movements and add animation layers on top of the motion capture data,
giving more appealing body shapes and believable performance to the characters.

Also,
sometimes we had to create keys and pose the characters when they did not capture the movements or when the director had changed his mind about the captured performance always matching that "hand key" section to the
motion capture data.

These shots were much more fun to work as we had to animate the characters in a believable way.

One good example of that is the
shot that I have been working where Gloria hugs Erik, on the last
sequence of the movie.

Hope you like it,

The body mechanics of a walk cycle can be hard to animate. There are different forces and actions happening in the same time.
It is an "organized" fall, as we move forward our hips and will catch our body (before it falls) with the front leg, trusting the body weight on that leg, then moving the hips forward again, falling then catching with the other leg.
We are under the influence of the same Physic Laws where the Gravity is the most important one. A walk is a "fight" against the gravity, and this happens pretty much with all actions and movements of the live beings here on Earth.
However the animation principles can be applied to all characters, the timing and the way that one character walks is unique, just because our bodies and lives are not the same. Everyone walks. Everyone in a different way!
When I was studying acting, the first approach to understand a character was studying and exercising a way to express that character walking.
Considering the character's design, I came up with this 3 personalities walks using the Animationmentor's characters.

Hope that you like it,
Dan

Daniel Vasconcelloshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13377752259564788189noreply@blogger.com2
